‘Joker Folie a Deux’s Failure Has Now Extended to PVOD After Box Office Catastrophe
Warner Bros. is facing an uphill battle with Joker: Folie à Deux, as the film continues to struggle even after its debut on Premium Video On Demand (PVOD). After an utterly dismal box office run that saw the sequel to the billion dollar-grossing Joker leave theaters with a mere $58 million domestic gross, and $204 million worldwide—against a reported $300 million investment—the film’s PVOD release has gone even further in highlighting just how much the film has been rejected by audiences. After the movie dropped on PVOD last Tuesday, Folie à Deux landed in fourth place on both iTunes and Fandango’s charts.
On iTunes, where rankings are based on the number of transactions, Joker trailed behind the horror drama The Substance, which debuted only two days later and managed to place third. Over on Fandango, where the rankings are based on how much revenue a film makes instead, Joker also managed to land in fourth place. At least there was some happy news for Warner Bros. as its big hit Beetlejuice Beetlejuice returned to the top of the charts on both iTunes and Fandango in its fourth week of home release.
The lack of uptake for the movie isn’t overly surprising as it dropped like a fly from the multiplexes. The movie played in over 4,100 locations in the first two weeks of its run, before dropping to a little over 2,800 locations in its third week and then 1,200 theaters last week. This weekend, its box office numbers weren’t even reported by the trades, but it made just $140,000 from 324 theaters.
Why Has ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Flopped So Hard?
It’s hard to say without seeing for yourself, but the film has been incredibly divisive and the decision to switch from a Martin Scorsese-inspired drama/thriller to a courtroom drama with musical and fantasy elements went down like a lead balloon. The film’s critical reviews were not good either, and it appears to have landed at a “rotten” 33% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Collider’s Martin Tsai wrote:
Phillips had one job, which was to recreate the jittery cringe of the original
Joker
to capitalize on the commercial and awards successes. A middling courtroom tale and half-baked musical is not the kind of victory lap anyone wants. Your best bet is to go rewatch
The People’s Joker
and pretend this never happened.
Joker: Folie à Deux is available on digital now.
Joker: Folie à Deux explores Arthur Fleck’s ongoing struggle with his dual identity as he unexpectedly discovers love and unleashes his hidden musical talent. Set against a backdrop of societal unrest, Arthur’s journey intertwines personal transformation with chaotic encounters, leading to profound shifts in his life and the world around him.

Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Marty Supreme’ May Be One of A24’s Most Expensive Movies Ever
A24 has developed quite a name for itself thanks to its willingness to tackle projects that few others could even conceive of, and one of its most intriguing upcoming films just got an interesting update. A new report from Deadline revealed that Marty Supreme, the upcoming Ping-Pong movie starring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, may be one of the most expensive A24 films ever produced. The movie is currently filming in New York and Deadline reports that a rumored budget of around $70 million, more than double and triple the final price tags of some of the studio’s most famous movies. In addition to Chalamet and Paltrow, Marty Supreme also stars Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, Sandra Bernhard, Tyler the Creator, Abel Ferrara, Kevin O’Leary, and more.
Ronald Bronstein wrote the script for Marty Supreme along with Josh Safdie, who has also been tapped to direct. Safdie’s most famous work came from directing Uncut Gems, the 2019 psychological thriller starring Adam Sandler that many felt he should have received an Oscar nomination for his performance. Safdie also directed Good Time, the 2017 heist thriller starring Robert Pattinson, and he also worked with Bronstein on the script. Adam Sandler recently confirmed that he would reunite with Josh and his brother Benny, who also directed him in Uncut Gems, on a new project, but details about it are being kept under wraps. Benny recently played Edward Teller in Oppenheimer after also featuring in one episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi and playing Joel Wachs in Licorice Pizza, and he’s also been tapped for a small role in Happy Gilmore 2, which is currently in production.
Another of A24’s Most Expensive Films Is Coming Soon
While A24 is filming Marty Supreme in New York, it is also engaged in post-production on The Smashing Machine, the upcoming film starring Dwayne Johnson as UFC legend Mark Kerr, which has also been dubbed one of the most expensive A24 movies. Marty Supreme director Josh Safdie’s brother, Benny Safdie, has been tapped to direct The Smashing Machine, which wrapped earlier this year. Johnson will star in the film alongside Emily Blunt, with Mark Kerr also receiving a writing credit for his work consulting the film.
Marty Supreme is currently filming in New York but does not yet have an official release window. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates and watch Chalamet in Dune: Part Two, now streaming on Max.

‘Yellowstone’ Director Hints at a Big Potential Return in Final Season
The end of Yellowstone is just around the corner, and fans are anxiously wondering: could Kevin Costner’s John Dutton make an appearance after all? Despite Costner’s confirmed exit, director Christina Voros hinted that his character may remain “integral” to the story. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Voros, who directed four of the final six episodes, teased, “His presence is integral. I think to say any more than that would potentially compromise all the work that went into redacting the scripts!”
Perhaps more intriguingly, given that Costner is not attached to the series — at least in public — Voros offered something of a cryptic answer when she was asked how different the set was without Costner’s presence, stating that she “didn’t know if we were without him”, which certainly offers fans the prospect that one very big surprise in a stetson may be waiting for us when the finale ends.
Half the ‘Yellowstone’ Cast Don’t Know the Ending
Yellowstone’s fifth season finale was kept under Marvel-level secrecy. Scripts were so heavily redacted that “half the cast doesn’t know what happens,” Voros revealed. She shared how she herself became “the gatekeeper,” ensuring that cast members received only the scenes they were in, allowing for genuine reactions and protecting story surprises.
“The energy around it was more about protecting it for the audience than it was some clandestine thing.”
The high level of secrecy is necessary, though. We rejoin Yellowstone at an intense moment as the family patriarch, John Dutton, faces a climactic family conflict. John and his daughter Beth are on one side, while son Jamie stands on the other, setting the stage for an all-out battle. Voros believes the fight has been greater than all of them together, adding:
“[The fight is] for the land. “It’s always about the family banding together to fight for the land, to fight for the Dutton name.”
But as we come to the end of the tracks for the show, have we seen the last of the Dutton clan? It’s unlikely, we know that. For Voros, she’s keen for things not to be wrapped up in a neat bow.
You want to leave them wanting more. A conclusion like this needs to feel satisfying, but you don’t want people to not miss Beth or Rip or Kayce. There’s always a weight on any show that’s coming to a conclusion. You want people to love it as much as you do. But when you have so many millions of people who are so invested on the show, you are never going to make everyone happy because everyone has their own dream of what happens. That is what’s exciting about the end of the season — the way Taylor has kind of unexpectedly drifted into a conclusion of the show that always leaves one space to wonder, what happens next?
Yellowstone‘s final season will premiere on November 10 on Paramount. You can catch up on past episodes on Peacock. Stay tuned for more.
