The Big Picture
- Tommy Lee Jones is a highly acclaimed actor who carefully selects his projects, which director Brian Helgeland had to consider when trying to convince him to join Finestkind.
- Helgeland had to convince Jones by providing a backstory for his character’s presence in Massachusetts, with the lure of higher priced New England scallops being the tipping point.
- Helgeland used his personal experience as a former fisherman and a serendipitous encounter with a Texas truck in New Bedford to further sway Jones’ decision to take on the role in Finestkind.
Tommy Lee Jones is a tough nut to crack – at least when it comes to getting him on board for a new production. The recipient of esteemed honors including an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Fugitive star has earned the right to be picky when it comes to what projects he’ll add his name to. Knowing that he had only one chance to hook the big fish for his upcoming crime thriller Finestkind, director Brian Helgeland fully prepared for the task at hand. In an interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub ahead of the world premiere at TIFF, the screenplay writer and filmmaker shared exactly how it all went down.
“I sent [the script] to Tommy Lee, and he called me up, and basically he said, ‘I read the script, liked it. Let me ask you something, what in the world is a guy from Texas doing in Massachusetts fishing?’” A fair question for anyone who’s doing their due diligence before agreeing to a role, Helgeland said that he “anticipated the question” and was ready to fire back with a good answer. “‘You had a shrimp boat in Galveston and it sunk. You came up to New Bedford to make enough money to buy another shrimp boat and then go back down, but you met this woman, you had a child, and you never went home,’” the director explained to an uncertain Jones.
While the answer was well-thought-out, it wasn’t quite enough to set things right in Jones’ mind, “Well, why did I come to New Bedford?” he asked. Sensing that his fish was on the line, and it was only a matter of reeling him in, Helgeland said, “Because the price of New England scallops is a lot higher than Gulf Coast shrimp.” After mulling it over “for a second,” Helgeland says that Jones was “in”. However, the director believes that had he not been prepared with the entire backstory, the JFK star would’ve passed on the role. “He’s always sort of testing you to see how deep you’ve thought things through.”
Art Imitating Life
When it comes to the life of a fisherman, Helgeland knows a thing or two – information that undoubtedly helped him sway the opinion of Jones for his latest project. “I fished when I was a kid,” the writer and filmmaker explains, “and there were fishermen from all over the place that would come up to New Bedford because it’s a huge fishing port. The first time we location-scouted, we got to a dock in New Bedford. I got out of the scout van, and I’m standing in front of a Dodge Challenger with Texas plates.”
Taken aback by the sight of the Lonestar State truck that looked “like it’s been driven through hell and back,” Helgeland knew he had to get an image of it to Jones. “I got my iPhone and I did a video there. I started on the Texas plate, and then I pulled back, and I did a 360 of the New Bedford fishing fleet, and I sent it right to Tommy Lee and didn’t hear back from him.” Eager to get his leading man’s feedback on this serendipitous moment, Helgeland says, “Then about a month later, when I finally met him face-to-face, I said, ‘Did you ever get that video I sent you?’ And he went, ‘The one with the Texas license plate?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah,’ and he goes, “I got it.” [Laughs] End the discussion.”
As of right now, no release date or trailer has been set for Finestkind, which will stream on Paramount+, but the film premieres tomorrow at the Toronto International Film Festival.

One of the Biggest Disappointments From The Rock Is Finding Streaming Success on Netflix
Some things don’t need to be made into movies. That’s what many thought when it was decided that we needed a Baywatch movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron. At the time, the 2017 film did make $177,856,751 worldwide with a $69 million dollar budget but it wasn’t a beloved classic like the show that it was based on. If anything, many mocked the film. Now though, the Johnson and Efron team-up is finding a second life on streaming and has hit the charts on Netflix. So the people are still trying to cling to that Johnson energy.
Currently, the film is ranked 8 on the Netflix charts. For the week of October 28 to November 3, the film gained 4.1 million views and 7.9 million hours viewed in the English charts for the streaming platform. Ahead of it on the chart was a mix of original movies Netflix put out for Halloween, including: Don’t Move, Time Cut, and the Anna Kendrick film Woman of the Hour, as well as other films offered on the platform like Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
It may seem like a shock to those who remember when Baywatch came out and the response to the movie. The movie itself is fine, a cheesy attempt at using a known IP to go ahead and bring people into theaters and Efron and Johnson are great in it. Baywatch also includes Priyanka Chopra and Alexandria Daddario which makes it a stacked cast. But it just wasn’t what people wanted. Which is shocking given how much this movie is very much like the original show that people love and cherish.
An Attempt at Nostalgia
Johnson plays Lieutenant Mitch Buchanon, who doesn’t get along with his new recruit, Matt Brody (Efron). But the two discover a criminal plot against their bay that forces them to protect the beach! Honestly, it is exciting to watch, given we do love the original, and it is essentially just a story about lifeguards, but still. At the time of the film’s release, its Rotten Tomatoes score of 18% didn’t help the film’s success and even now, the audience score is at 56%. It’s not a great look for the film but the Netflix success does show that people do want to watch Johnson in action. That or someone was really into Efron as a lifeguard and watched Baywatch on repeat.

Before ‘Nosferatu,’ Robert Eggers Directed This Brutal 90% Rotten Tomatoes Streaming Hit
Robert Eggers’ next movie, Nosferatu, is due in theaters on Christmas Day, but several years ago he directed a classic action film that’s a major hit on streaming. Eggers helmed The Northman, the 2022 historical epic starring Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman which has made its way into the top 10 on the Prime Video international charts. The Northman follows a young Viking prince on a quest to avenge his father’s murder, but the more he learns about his death, the harder it is for him to complete his quest. In addition to Skarsgård and Kidman, The Northman also stars Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, and Edgar Abram, and the film currently sits at a 90% score from critics and a 64% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
Eggers made his directorial debut in 2015 on The Witch, the folk horror film which also stars Anya Taylor-Joy and also features Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, and Julian Richings. The Witch was a hit upon its release, grossing $40 million on a $4 million budget and also netting scores of 91% from critics and 60% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Eggers followed The Witch with The Lighthouse, the 2019 psychological black and white horror film starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography. The Lighthouse grossed $18 million on an $11 million budget with scores of 90% from critics and 72% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to his upcoming work on Nosferatu, Eggers has also been tapped to direct The Knight, but few details are known about the project at this time.
Who Stars in Robert Eggers’ Next Project, ‘Nosferatu’?
Robert Eggers has assembled yet another star-studded ensemble for his next outing, Nosferatu. Emma Corrin, who recently played Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, was tapped for the role of Anna Harding, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Nicholas Hoult playing Freidrich Harding and Thomas Hutter, respectively. Bill Skarsgård will play Count Orlok in the upcoming supernatural horror film, with Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson playing Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz and Dr. Wilheim Sievers, respectively. Nosferatu will premiere in theaters on Christmas Day.
The Northman stars Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman and was written and directed by Robert Eggers. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates and watch The Northman on Prime Video worldwide or on Starz in the United States.

Release Date For Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon Ho’s ‘Mickey 17’ Delayed
Looks like we’re going to have to wait a bit longer to see Mickey 17, which is Bong Joon-ho’s eagerly awaited follow-up to Parasite . Warner Bros. has moved the release date of Mickey 17, the Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi thriller, from January 31, 2025, to April 18, 2025, which will let the film take advantage of IMAX screens, as well as potentially bring in bigger audiences during the Easter holiday season. The film also stars Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.
Back before the movie release date musical chairs started, Mickey 17 was competing with the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua, for premium screens in April, but Lionsgate has high hopes for the biopic and shunted it down the line to October in the hopes of capturing some awards attention. That freed up the April 18 slot and allowed Warner Bros. to secure it for Mickey 17.
“When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for ‘Mickey 17,’” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX.”
What is ‘Mickey 17’ About?
Based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Mickey 17 stars Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” employee on a mission to colonize an ice planet. In the novel, Mickey’s job requires him to undertake dangerous missions, and when he dies, he’s replaced by an exact copy of himself with his memories mostly intact. In Bong’s version, he raises the stakes even higher. “The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him ten times more,” Bong revealed to the crowd at CinemaCon back in April, when the trailer was first unveiled. “It’s a sci-fi movie, but it’s a human story.”
As for Pattinson, a man known for taking an eccentric and curious approach to the projects he chooses, the sheer lunacy of the movie was the big selling point. The actor acknowledged that Mickey 17 was: “one of the funniest, bizarre sci-fi scripts I’ve ever read in my life.” In the film, Pattinson is set to play different versions of the same character. And though they have the same memories, Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 are their own people. The 17 may be more willing to help, but the 18 is what the actor referred to, somewhat ominously, as “an evil brother.”
Mickey 17 will now open on April 18, 2025. Stay tuned to Collider for more.
